Week of January 15 – January 19, 2018

Lower School 

Pre-K3, Pre-K4 

Children are working on Shapes/Geometry under the Preschool Skills section of ABCYA.com. This game gives them practice in symmetry. It also helps them to practice scrolling and using the mouse in a fun way.                                  

Kindergarten, Grade 1

The children are working on word processing. They are practicing typing their name into a file and changing the font size and color. They are also learning some new vocabulary, such as ‘font’.

Grade 2 - Grade 4

The children are writing a Martin Luther King poem, I Have a Dream, using a poem generator online.                                                      
 Upper School                       

Grades 5-8

Students will learn about Dr. Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights issues he worked on. I will show a video of Dr. King saying his ‘I Have a Dream’ speech, which is very moving. We will also watch a short clip on Brainpop.com, and the children will take a quiz about the move clip.

Week of January 8 – January 12, 2018

Note:

Lower School 

Pre-K3, Pre-K4      
The children will key in their name on WordPad. Then they can change the font size to make it bigger, and choose a font color.

Kindergarten, Grade 1
The children are practicing keyboarding using ABCYA games. There are various levels that they can choose from.

Grade 2 - Grade 4
The children will use a graphic organizer to pre-write a paragraph. Then they will key in their paragraph, writing about their Christmas vacation.


Upper School                       

Grades 5-8
We will discuss the Christmas card exchange that we did with the Archdiocese of Newark. I took the remainder of the cards to Care One in Oradell, to be distributed among the residents there. Children are reminded that it is kind to share with people who might not have received any Christmas cards at all.
Next, we will write a get well card for our traffic helper, Mr. John, who helps us to cross the street safely every day.

Students will use a graphic organizer to pre-write a paragraph. Then they will key in their paragraph, writing about their Christmas vacation.

Welcome back, everybody!  I hope you all had a great Christmas and a Happy New Year! Thank you for all the lovely gifts you gave me. That was very thoughtful of you!

Part II: Students will go to Google Earth to find the school we exchanged Christmas cards with through the Archdiocese of Newark. They will answer some questions about what they see, the distance from our school to their school, etc.

Week of December 11 – December 15, 2017

Lower School 

Pre-K3. Pre-K4      

We worked on a game called ‘Alphabet Order’ on ABCYA.com. The children had to recognize letters and drag and drop them to their alphabetical order spot. This helps them to recognize the letters of the alphabet and gives them practice using the mouse to drag and drop.

Kindergarten, Grade 1

The children wrote a short note to their families for Christmas. This helps them to see a practical use for keyboarding and to learn word processing.

Grade 2 and Grade 3

The children wrote a note to their families for Christmas. Then they chose a clip art picture to copy and paste on the letter. This teaches them the parts of a friendly letter.


Grade 4 

The children are learning about Internet Safety, on jrbrainpop.com. They started by watching a short video clip and then took a quiz online to show what they know.

Upper School                       

Grades 5-8


The children wrote a letter to their families about a favorite memory they have. They are learning to think about others and how they feel. They will give the letters to their families for Christmas.

Lower School 

Pre-K3. Pre-K4      

We worked on a game called ‘Monster Mansion – Letter Match’ on ABCYA.com. The children had to match capital letters with lower case letter. This helps them to recognize the letters of the alphabet and gives them practice using the mouse.

Kindergarten, Grade 1

The children logged on to ABCYA.com and worked on a game called ‘Monster Mansion – Alphabet Match’ to match letters with words. This helps them with their alphabet and also with using the mouse.

Grade 2

The children are working on keyboarding practice, using games n ABCYA.com: Cup stack typing, and Jump Key.

Grade 3  

The children are working on keyboarding skills. They logged on to ABCYA.com and used the keyboarding games there.

Grade 4 

The children are learning about Internet Safety, on Brainpop.com.

Upper School                       

Grades 5-8


The children are coding since it is Computer Science Education week (Dec. 4- Dec. 11). They are using Code monkey. We watched a short video about computer programming on Brainpop.com.

Lower School 

Pre-K3. Pre-K4      

We worked on a game called ‘Connect the dots’ on ABCYA.com. The children had to connect which letter in the alphabet comes next. This helps them to recognize the letters of the alphabet and gives them practice using the mouse.

Kindergarten, Grade 1

The children logged on to ABCYA.com and worked on a game to put letters in alphabetical order. This helps them with their alphabet and also with using the mouse.

Grade 2

The children went to a website called ‘Puzzlemaker.com’. The created their own word search puzzle by keying in words that have to do with Thanksgiving. Then the clicked on ‘Create my puzzle’ to make a word search puzzle.

Grade 3  

The children are learning how to research an animal of their choice. They went to a website to get information, and then they took notes on the animal’s characteristics. One website was www.animalfactguide.com. Another was Kidzone. They will create a MS/Word file with the main facts.                    

Grade 4 

The children created a table and wrote ‘Thanks’ at the top. Then they keyed in things they are thankful for into each cell, for example, my good friends, my nice family, my lovely school.
